Marriage age of women to be raised from 18 to 21

The government wanted to raise the marriage age of women from 18 to 21. It was passed in cabinet and processing on parliament. If it implemented, it will bring the age of marriage for both women and men as same.

In last june modi government setup a 10 member committee for conducting study about raising the marriage age of women. It was headed by politician jaya jaitley. The other members of the committee included secretaries of higher education, school education , health etc

The proposal is aimed at enabling women access better educational and economic opportunities while also ensuring their physical well being. This move is also being cited as a step that allow women to attain psychological maturity before marriage and also help’s to bring down the incidence of teenage pregnancies.

The hint was given by modi on last independent day, so after that some religious groups were in protest. And also there has been increase in the number of marriage of girls, aged 18 to 20 following the announcement to raise the marriage age. Because their parents fear that once the age is legally raised they will have to wait for 2-3 more years.
